Job Introduction
Lincolnshire County Council is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and innovative person to be the Historic Buildings Project Officer (known internally as the Mud and Stud Project Officer). You will join our experienced and successful Historic Places Team – putting the historic environment at the heart of the county council's place-making role and planning advisory service.
Lincolnshire is a large, rural county with a landscape that ranges from the rolling hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds to the Fens and its long coastline. The county has a rich and diverse archaeological and built heritage ranging from prehistoric funerary landscapes, a plethora of Roman roads and settlements, remains of a former coastal salt-making industry, medieval abbeys and deserted settlements and a host of historic buildings many with high quality designed landscapes. The county is home to a number of historic towns and a thriving coastal holiday industry.
The successful candidate will be required to create an inventory of the buildings of Lincolnshire built in the mud and stud vernacular way. We want to understand the distribution of this type of humble building across the historic county and ensure they are all represented on the Historic Environment Record. Working with colleagues inside and outside the County Council, the post-holder will scour the county for historic and surviving examples of this traditional and much-loved Lincolnshire building type.
Applicants will be expected to demonstrate that they can work unsupervised, meet tight deadlines and have very good communication skills.
To be successful you will ideally have a wide knowledge of British history and archaeology, an understanding of the role heritage can play in the lives of the people of Lincolnshire as well as visitors to the county and be able to use a full range of communication skills to excite people about the county’s rich heritage. A working knowledge of the software system HBSMR and associated GIS systems is desirable.
Essential requirements include a degree in history, archaeology or a related subject together with a demonstrable experience of recording historic buildings. Computer literacy is highly desirable.
A full current driving licence and the use of a car are essential.
