Travel Options Officer - Independent Travel Training

Job Introduction

Are you passionate about helping young people gain confidence and independence?

Do you have experience of working with SEN Children and young people?

If yes, then we have the perfect role for you!

Lincolnshire County Council is looking to recruit a full-time (37 hours) Independent Travel Training trainer to join our amazing Transport Services department and help play a central role in achieving positive outcomes for children in Lincolnshire.

In this rewarding role, you’ll work one-to-one with young people, planning safe travel routes, delivering bespoke training, and supporting them to travel independently to school or college, as well as delivering classroom sessions teaching SEND students the importance of road safety.

About the role

You will be joining a highly motivated and friendly team, which is committed to helping children and young people fulfil their potential.

As an ITT Trainer, you will report to the Travel Options Senior, and work with our SEN Children in developing their travel independence. This role involves assessing a person’s existing travel skills, creating personalised travel plans, and providing instruction to ensure they can navigate public transport and other travel methods confidently and safely.

During your training period you will work with existing members of the team to shadow them and will have the opportunity to obtain a formal Travel Training qualification.

Working days are Monday to Friday and daily hours will vary depending on a trainee’s schedule - this is typically early mornings and/or late afternoons.

You will be supported by a team of experienced travel trainers who you will work alongside to deliver this service. The team offers a broad range of knowledge of SEND children, safe walking routes and public transport.  Colleagues have regular catchups to ensure effective communication and knowledge sharing as well as the sharing of their experiences of the week.

Key responsibilities of an Independent Travel Trainer:

Assessment: evaluating a person's existing travel skills, abilities, and needs.

Training: developing and delivering individualised training programmes, often in the field, to help individuals gain confidence and competence in traveling independently.

Risk Assessment: conducting thorough risk assessments for each travel route to ensure safety and minimize potential hazards.

Route Planning: planning safe and accessible routes using various modes of transportation, including public transport.

Support: providing ongoing support and guidance throughout the training process, and continuing to support individuals as they practise and improve their travel skills.

Communication: engaging with parents, guardians, carers, and educational institutions to promote independent travel and ensuring a shared understanding of the individual's progress and needs.

Record Keeping: maintaining detailed records of training sessions, assessments, and progress to track an individual's journey towards independent travel.

About you

You will have experience supporting young people with SEND, strong communication skills, and a person-centred approach.  You will also have a proactive approach and willingness to build effective relationships with our ITT partners, Lincolnshire families, other departmental teams, and key stakeholders across the organisation.

You will have a full driving licence and the ability to work flexibly across the Lincolnshire area, which will include early starts to support students to travel to their educational settings. In return, you will be joining a supportive team making a real difference in young lives - helping them build essential life skills and confidence for the future.

The environment is fast-paced and demanding.  You will need to be a good communicator, well organised, have excellent written skills and be empathetic, along with having a pragmatic approach to problem solving.
