Deputy Head of Legal

Job Introduction

Deputy Head of Legal
Salary: £75,132 - £80,781
Location: Lincoln / Hybrid
Closing Date: Sunday 22nd June 2025
Interview Date: Week commencing 7th July 2025

Legal Services Lincolnshire (LSL) is one of the largest shared legal practices in the country, supporting seven public sector partners and delivering a high-quality, in-house legal service. We're now looking for an experienced senior legal professional to join our leadership team as Deputy Head of Legal.

This is a rare opportunity to step into a pivotal role where you’ll help shape the strategic direction of the service, lead expert legal teams, and provide high-level advice on complex and high-profile matters across public law, governance, and major programmes.

About the role:

As Deputy Head of Legal, you’ll work closely with the Head of Legal to lead the strategic and operational delivery of legal services across the Council and its partners. You’ll take responsibility for managing multi-disciplinary legal teams, advising on the most sensitive and complex issues, and acting as a source of senior expertise on public law and governance.

Your leadership will support the delivery of Council-wide priorities and major transformation programmes. You’ll also play a vital role in supporting Monitoring Officers across partner authorities and may be appointed Deputy Monitoring Officer in their absence.

What we’re looking for:

We're seeking a senior qualified solicitor or barrister with at least seven years' post-qualification experience, ideally gained within an in-house local authority legal service. You’ll bring a strong track record of managing legal teams and delivering expert legal advice in complex, high-risk situations.

We’re looking for someone who thrives on challenge, builds credibility quickly, and is motivated by public service and collaborative working. Strategic thinking, political astuteness, and an enabling, solutions-focussed approach will be key.

Why join us?

  • A leadership role in a large, well-established public sector legal service

  • An agile, hybrid working culture with a blend of office and remote work

  • The chance to shape how legal services support transformation across Lincolnshire

  • Supportive colleagues and opportunities for ongoing professional development

  • Generous local government pension scheme and holiday entitlement
